Hi, I'm Jena

Subtasks add an additional level of organization to your ClickUp Workspace , allowing you to create more detailed goals or smaller to-do items as part of a task. When a subtask is added, we refer to the original task as the parent task.

Just like tasks, you can add detailed information like assignees, due dates, and priorities to subtasks.

Creating  a Subtask

You can create subtasks wherever a parent task exists.

To create a subtask:

  1. Open a task and scroll down to see the Subtasks section.
  2. Click into the New subtask field to add a task name and any other details that you want to add.
  3. Click Save.

You can also create subtasks using the Create subtask icon found on tasks.

Displaying Subtasks

You can display all subtasks under a parent task in a List, Board, or Box view. Find the Subtasks button in the upper right corner of your Workspace and choose a display option:

  • Collapse all: Subtasks are collapsed under their parent tasks. This option is on by default.
  • Expand all: Subtasks are expanded under their parent task.
  • As separate tasks: Display all subtasks and tasks at the same level. Subtasks can be identified by the subtask icon.

Nested Subtasks

Nested Subtasks provide an additional layer of organization by giving you the ability to create subtasks within subtasks. I do not recommend going further than three layers of Subtasks deep, but ClickUp does give you the availability to organize seven layers of subtasks. You can select how many layers you want within the Nested Subtasks ClickApp.

Create a nested subtask

To create a nested subtask, click the + icon next to an existing subtask. You can then rearrange it as needed.

Other Helpful ClickApps to use with Subtasks

ClickApps are ClickUp features that customize your team’s Workspace experience. You can enable one or more features to create the perfect workflow for you and your team.

Remap Subtasks Due Dates ClickApp

When you change a parent task’s due date, you are able to automatically change its subtask due dates. For example, if you change a parent task due date from October 1 to October 6, that is a change of five days, so you will also increase all subtask due dates by 5 days. Be sure you go into ClickApps, and turn on Remap Subtasks Due Dates ClickApp is enabled.

  1. Change the due date of a parent task that has subtasks with due dates
  2. You will be prompted to change the subtask dates, click Change subtask dates

Email ClickApp

With this ClickApp, you can send and receive emails directly within a task, without ever leaving ClickUp! Replies will funnel into the same task thread. Easily switch between sending a comment to teammates and sending an email to anyone outside of ClickUp.

To Enable the Email ClickApp:

  1. Click your Workspace avatar in the lower-left.
  2. Select ClickApps.
  3. Enable the Email ClickApp.
  4. From the Spaces dropdown, select where to enable the ClickApp.

Send emails from a task:

  1. Open a task.
  2. Click into the Comment field in the lower-right.
  3. Click the email icon in the lower-left.
